There’s always pressure of playing on a big stage like National Championship. However, the pressure of being the defending champions is even bigger. The Senior Boys of Minerva Public School were the National Champions in the RFYS Football tournament 2017-18. Their game was praised by one and all as they went on to lift the trophy. This year, they are on a quest to retain the coveted trophy and they have been impressive so far. A lot has changed in this one year, that includes the quality of the game, the competition, the number of participants and the fan base. Minerva Public School have gained immense reputation for their high-quality football and this year as well, they will be raring to go in the National Championship.
Their first task this year was to retain the first trophy of the tournament, City Championship and they had to put in the hard yards to win it. Their game against Chitkara International School saw two late goals in this sizzling encounter. Thanks to Abhishek Verma’s 88th minute screamer, that helped them defend their City Championship trophy. With 6 wins and 1 draw in the City Championship phase, the Minerva boys were riding high on confidence in the National Qualifiers. They amassed a total of 48 goals in these fixtures and in this onslaught, their players Abhishek Verma, Denzel Kharshandi, Aseemjeet Singh and Yuno Richard played a crucial role.
They were prepared and confident to hop into the National Championship as they convincingly defeated their opponents in the North Zone 1 National Qualifiers. Their face-off with Ludhiana’s champions, Doaba Public School, was a smooth sail. They followed it up with a victory against Dehradun’s champions. Denzel’s hattrick and goals from Sunny Dahiya and Nadeem Salim meant that Chandigarh’s champions sealed their National Championship berth once again.
They will now be wary of the fact that there won’t be any easy games awaiting them. Unlike the other teams, Minerva Public School holds an advantage. They know how to win the finals. They’re slowly inching forward to develop the habit of winning the finals, and these habits die hard. There is no doubt that Minerva Public School is going to be one of the most feared sides in the Senior Boys category and will be a force to reckon with when they take the field in the upcoming National Championship.
32 best teams from the City Championships will be competing in Mumbai from 29th December – 7th January and all the matches of the National Championship will be live-streamed on our website and Facebook.
