Umesh Chandra College catch the eye after a resounding RFYS win

The Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) football tournament continued in Mumbai and Kolkata on Friday. Matches in Kolkata were held at Jadavpur University and were group encounters, while the games in Mumbai were held at Palava Football Stadium, Dombivli and were qualifiers for the group stage.

All the games on Friday were of the College Boys category. St. Xavier's College faced City College (CCBA) in a Group C encounter at Kolkata. It was a close game that was decided by a solitary goal scored by City College's Sonu Yadav in the 17th minute.

The second match in Kolkata saw Umesh Chandra College (Day) dominate Aliah University in a Group D encounter that ended 12-0. Subashis Mondal opened the scoring in the third minute, while Surojit Kundu made it 2-0 six minutes later. Sunny Shaw got Umesh Chandra College's third a minute later. Goals by Santanu Bera, Akash Dalui and a second by Surojit Kundu made it 6-0 at half-time.

Siddhartha Das scored the first two goals of the second half for Umesh Chandra College before Bera scored two in quick succession to complete his hat-trick. He went on to score his fourth goal to make it 11-0 just before Kundu added the icing to the cake by completing his own hat-trick and ending the game with a resounding 12-0 score-line.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, GR Patil Junior College of Arts, Science, Commerce faced Model College in the first match there. Model College took the lead in the 30th minute and scored two more quick-fire goals just before the hour mark to register a convincing 3-0 win.

Mumbai's second match of the day pitted Birla College of Arts, Science and Commerce against SK Somaiya College of Arts, Science and Commerce. Birla College took the lead in the 21st minute and headed into the half-time interval with a 1-0 advantage. They doubled their lead four minutes into the second half after a defensive mix-up by SK Somaiya at the back.

Birla College could have been further in front soon after had it not been for a brilliant save by SK Somaiya's keeper to deny them a third from the penalty spot. A SK Somaiya goal with a little over ten minutes remaining in the game, however, set up a blockbuster finish to the match. Birla College though managed to withstand the late pressure and even added a goal of their own before full-time to clinch a 3-1 win.

The third match in Mumbai between St. Paul College and School and KJ Somaiya Art and Commerce was another tense game that was decided by the odd goal. St. Paul College and School broke the deadlock with four minutes on the clock and defended astutely for the remainder of the match to qualify for the next round with a 1-0 win.

The last match of the day in Mumbai saw VG Vaze College take on KJ Somaiya College of Engineering. It was yet another evenly-contested match that was decided by a sole goal in the second half, which saw VG Vaze College qualify for the next round. The 1-0 defeat will be even harder for KJ Somaiya College to swallow considering that it was eventually an own goal that ended their hopes in the tournament.
