The final day of Bengaluru’s Football City Championship demanded great determination and perseverance from the youngsters of the city. It was not an easy route for any of the teams to reach to this level and it was all dependent on the single game they had in hand. All the teams desired to play in the National Qualifiers and everyone did their best to reach there. However, the winning four teams across four categories played like champions and deservingly booked their place in the next level of the tournament.
The day started with a brilliant strike from outside the box from the striker of St. Joseph against Greenwood High International School. However, in this Senior Boys fixture, Greenwood High International School didn’t stay behind for long. The game was levelled 1-1 at HT. Greenwood High International School began the second half with much improved aggression. A minute into the second half and they won the penalty which was converted by Dhruv Raghavan. 18 minutes later, St. Joseph came back into match with Shailesh’s tap-in after defender’s mistake. The game was in dying minutes, making its way into penalties, but Greenwood’s Sahit Manohar saved the game for his team and made it 3-2. They maintained that narrow lead for the last minutes and won the Bengaluru’s Senior Boys Championship.
In the Junior Boys category, Govt. Sports High School were taken by surprise in the starting minutes itself by Ved Vignan Maha Vidyapeeth. They started aggressively and two goals inside 7 minutes of the game from Philban Majaw gave a comfortable cushion to Ved Vignan Maha Vidyapeeth. Philban Majaw assisted the third goal from the corner, which was headed in by Starwell Mawiong. In the second half, Govt. Sports High School did everything they could only to find one goal late in the game, and by then it was too late to trouble their opponents. Ved Vignan Maha Vidyapeeth won the championship by 3-1.
The School Girls of Kendriya Vidyalaya stepped on the ground with their confidence on another level. They had the game in their pockets by the Half-Time where they were already leading by 4 goals to nil. Second half didn’t change things for their opponents, BM English School as Kendriya Vidyalaya continued their scoring spree. They won the game and the championship by 11-0.
The last one was probably the most hard-fought game of the day. The College Boys of Acharya Institutes were up against Kristu Jayanti College. Neither of the sides were able to break the deadlock until Karifa Kallo’s stunning free-kick from around 35 yards out found the back of the net. They headed into HT with that one goal lead. Acharya Institutes attacked in numbers to find an equalizer but in vain. One goal was enough for Kristu Jayanti College to win the College Boys Championship in Bengaluru.
These victories will remain in the player’s memories for long and they will hope to flourish in the National Qualifiers when they will face the champions of other cities. The best talents will never be left behind and with the same will-power, they will surely cover a long distance.
