One of the few teams that has had a great run at RFYS Football tournament is Mumbai’s Thakur College of Commerce & Science. The institute’s Senior Boys have qualified for the National Championship yet another time after a fabulous show of Football in the City Championship as well as the National Qualifiers. Despite extremely tough competition in a competitive city like Mumbai, they have surfaced as champions and it will be foolish of any team in the National Championship to underestimate them. In the inaugural season of RFYS, their Senior Boys made it to the Semifinal. They qualified for the National Championship again in RFYS 2017-18, but they couldn’t make the most of it. They’ll look to make the most of it this year and considering the form they’ve displayed, it’s fair to say that they’ll be one of the top contenders.
Their City Championship run was more like a warm up for them as they defeated their opponents with big margins and kept numerous clean sheets. Unlike the usual City Championship final, which is expected to be a tough, evenly matched contest, the final too was a one-sided affair. They faced KC College in the final of the City Championship and defeated them 6-1. Winning by such margins in a city where this sport is followed and played with immense passion is a great achievement. Ashley Koli, their star striker, would be under the radar of numerous coaches playing their teams in the National Championship. This jersey no. 7 scored 18 goals in 9 matches in the City Championship. Midfielder Runal Patil complemented him well in the attack and scored 16 goals in 9 matches.
They didn’t slow down after winning the City Championship. Continuing their fantastic form, they defeated Indore’s Emerald Heights International HSS 3-1 and Ahmedabad’s Champions Delhi Public School 8-1 in the West Zone 1 National Qualifiers. Runal Patil and Ashley Koli scored 5 and 3 goals respectively in those two matches. With such good form, there’s no reason this team would slow down. However, the game changes entirely in the National Championship. It won’t be an easy task but the Thakur boys have proved in the past that they aren’t made for easy games.
32 best teams from the City Championships will be competing in Mumbai from 29th December – 7th January and all the matches of the National Championship will be live-streamed on our website and Facebook.
